At the beginning of my website-building journey, I needed something beyond just writing my own blog. I wanted to have total control and freedom of experimenting and monetizing my ideas while having the opportunity to develop several different brands in one place. That is exactly why I chose WordPress.org instead of WordPress.com.
Over time, I built three completely different websites:
- Sansu Blogs — my personal blogging space
- Simply Sansu — focused on digital marketing and SEO
- iClick Stories — dedicated to photography and visual storytelling
And honestly, WordPress.org gave me the flexibility to shape each one differently without limitations.
1. An Economical Option
WordPress.com looks easier at the beginning; however, after getting used to the platform, people tend to need more features, which will make their bills bigger. In WordPress.org, you need to pay for the website hosting and domain name only.
Instead of paying for restricted plans, I invest in things that actually matter — better design, SEO tools, and faster hosting.
2. I’m in Full Creative Control
As a person, I always hated restrictions and limitations. In WordPress.org, you are free to customize everything: your layouts, header, plugins, and even monetization process.
For example:
- My blogging website has a more personal storytelling vibe.
- My digital marketing website looks clean and business-oriented.
- My photography website focuses heavily on visuals and galleries.
Three websites. Three completely different identities.
3. Plugins Make Life Easier
One of the biggest reasons I prefer WordPress.org is plugins.
Need SEO? There’s a plugin.
Need speed optimization? Plugin.
Need image galleries, forms, backups, security, analytics, or AI tools? Plugin again.
It feels amazing not to have to start everything from scratch because you can experiment with your ideas easily, except for a few snippet codes.
4. WooCommerce Gives Unlimited Possibilities
Another huge advantage is WooCommerce.
If tomorrow I decide to sell:
- digital products,
- photography prints,
- services,
- eBooks,
- or merchandise,
I can turn any of my websites into an online store without rebuilding everything from zero.
That flexibility matters a lot when you are someone who constantly explores new ideas.
5. My Websites Feel Truly Mine
This is probably the biggest reason.
With WordPress.org, my websites feel personal. I can write freely, design freely, monetize freely, and grow without constantly worrying about platform restrictions.
As someone who enjoys expressing thoughts unapologetically and creatively, having that ownership matters more than convenience.
WordPress.org may require a little more learning in the beginning, but for me, the freedom, flexibility, and creative control made it absolutely worth it.
