Why I Can Watch The Sound of Music a Hundred Times With My Daughter

The Sound of Music

Every day, there is a short TV time for my tiny girl. That’s when we watch a few movies repeatedly, little by little, each day.

We are usually seated with some snacks or ice cream, happily munching away while watching. It’s adorable to see her lean against me and take a bite from my ice cream, her eyes completely glued to the movie. For those few moments, nothing else seems to matter except the music, the songs, and the joy on her face.

The Sound of Music is one such movie. And for both of us, it’s a movie we can watch a hundred times and never get tired of.

These days, my house is filled with the songs of this legendary movie. I grew up watching this movie, inspired by its music and warmth. I thought of passing on my interests to my little one too. What I found is that she is super happy to watch it.

There’s a magic about the movie. You never get tired of watching it, not just as a child, but even as a grown-up.

Why does my one-year-old like The Sound of Music?

Simple. It’s the simplicity of the movie and the children involved. Any movie centered around children is heartwarming for people of all ages. My little one shows special interest in songs, and I used to sing “Do-Re-Mi” quite often even when she was a newborn. It catches her attention instantly.

What is so attractive about The Sound of Music?

The poetic script and songs make it incredibly creative. I believe such movies can help improve a child’s appreciation for poetry, music, values, and art. Especially singing and rhythm.

The innocent humor is captivating. The movie is the right mix of entertainment, humor, and poetry.

At the same time, what stands out is the humour. It’s just impeccable. The cast has done an incredible job with their roles, from the smallest child to the grown-ups, including the butler.

There is a scene where the butler subtly replies to the carefree governess, “And I, the old butler.” Every single time, my one-year-old starts laughing. I believe it has something to do with the rhythm and sound of the words. While the butler certainly adds a hint of humor, I don’t think my little one is old enough yet to fully understand the joke.

On the whole, my daughter loves watching the movie and listening to its songs. And I am more than happy for her to spend time with movies like this.

Where are such movies now?

Except for Frozen, I can’t think of many modern movies that are so poetic and suitable for tiny minds. The Sound of Music is a clean movie that an entire family can watch together. It entertains without relying on noise, teaches without preaching, and remains just as charming today as it was decades ago.

Perhaps that is why, even after all these years, I can still watch The Sound of Music a hundred times with my daughter and never get tired of it.
