Loneliness Is Not Being Alone; It Is the Feeling of Being Lost
“Loneliness expresses the pain of being alone, and solitude expresses the glory of being alone.” — Paul Tillich
Loneliness is a feeling.
It is the feeling of losing purpose in life. No matter how rich you are, being lonely can be one of the biggest curses one can experience in life.
What Is Loneliness?
Loneliness is a paradox.
Sometimes, it is a state in life where you cannot find any of your loved ones nearby. You dearly long for them, but you cannot reach them.
On the other hand, sometimes you are surrounded by many people but cannot find a single person who sincerely loves you among them. And hence, you feel lost.
Loneliness is a state where you do not have anyone who cares for you, nor does anyone need you to take care of them.
Loneliness Can Make You Lose Purpose in Life
Loneliness is one feeling that can lead you to lose purpose in life.
You may feel that you do not have a reason to live. When you do not have anyone to take care of, you may feel that you do not have much to do in life.
Now, if you are at a stage in life where you need to be taken care of and no one attends to you, that is loneliness too.
Bottling Up Your Feelings
Many people do not vent their feelings. This is the most dangerous part of being lonely.
You seldom express your emotions or find a way to vent your feelings. This results in bottling up your emotions.
In the end, your bottled-up emotions can take dangerous shapes. Some can lead to disasters, while some people may lose control over their thoughts and emotions.
Someone to confide in can make a world’s difference.
To a large extent, consulting mental health experts or psychologists can also be helpful.
How Can We Identify Someone Feeling Lonely?
Loneliness is not always visible. A person can be surrounded by people, smiling and talking normally, yet feel completely alone inside. They may withdraw from conversations, stop sharing their feelings, lose interest in things they once enjoyed, or simply seem emotionally distant. Sometimes, the clearest sign is that they have no one with whom they feel comfortable being themselves.
What Can We Do About It?
The first thing is to recognize loneliness and not keep everything inside.
If you have someone you trust, talk to them. Confide in someone.
If you do not have someone to talk to, seeking help from a mental health professional can be helpful.
Sometimes, simply having someone listen to you can make a difference.
Some People Learn to Live with Loneliness
There are some people who handle loneliness beautifully. They keep themselves engaged and try to maintain a positive mindset. Some find solace in helping others, using their own experiences to understand what someone else may be going through. Some go on pilgrimages, while others choose adventures or travel. For them, keeping busy is not always about escaping loneliness. Sometimes, it is what helps them find purpose, peace and a way to thrive.
The Irony of Loneliness
The irony is that everyone experiences loneliness at least once in their lifetime.
An orphaned child.
An aged person deserted by their children.
A widow.
A widower.
A person who lost their child.
A person who lost all their family members in a disaster.
Or a person surrounded by many people, yet with no one who really cares for them.
No matter whether rich or poor, loneliness is almost guaranteed at some point in life.
Take heart and bear with that phase.
Remember, in life, everything is a passing phase.
This too will pass.
