Every football generation has its icons. Ours was blessed with two.

However, for many years, fans have been stuck in an endless debate about Messi versus Ronaldo. Who is better? Who is the best ever player?

For me, there is no answer to this question.

Since Ronaldo is not Messi, and Messi is not Ronaldo.

Messi Is a Phenomenon

However, can anyone deny that Lionel Messi is a genius meant for playing football?

He has made a tremendous impact on many people around the globe.

It is evident from the dribbling ability of Messi that there exists a magnet-like connection between the shoes and the ball. He has the best close control ever.

The whole world has witnessed it.

And Messi knows it too.

Messi’s Greatest Strengths

• Magic-like dribbling leaving the defenders trailing behind him.
• Exceptional ball control and an almost perfect first touch.
• Incredible vision to see passes that others don’t.
• World-class playmaking and creativity.
• Accurate passing that creates countless goal-scoring opportunities.
• Outstanding football intelligence and decision-making.
• Calmness under pressure.
• Clinical finishing skills and incredible free-kick ability.
• Great agility and balance that make him extremely difficult to dispossess.

Messi never dominates opponents physically. He outthinks them. He doesn’t force the game. He makes football look effortless.

Ronaldo Is a Complete Player

Cristiano Ronaldo is different.

Sometimes I wonder at the powerful shots he takes from distances where Messi would probably begin his dribble.

There is hardly anyone who can leap or jump the way Ronaldo does. His athleticism is extraordinary. Speed, strength, balance, stamina, and physicality have made him one of the greatest all-around players in football history.

He can score with either foot. He can score with his head. He can finish from inside the box, outside the box, from free kicks, and from the penalty spot.

What amazes me even more is his mentality.

Great discipline, immense work ethic, self-belief, and will to continue improving every year have helped him maintain peak performance for more than 20 years.

It is not only his famous ‘SIUUUUU’ celebration that has inspired millions around the globe.

The other day, I saw a poor boy in a remote village in Assam score a goal and celebrate with a SIUUUU.

That is the reach of a star who was born to play football.

Not just an ordinary footballer.

It’s not just about Ronaldo being talented, as he mixes his talent with the dedication that comes with hard work, discipline, fitness, and the desire to get better year by year.

Can They Even Be Compared?

At times, I think it’s impossible to compare the two.

They are totally different in my eyes when it comes to talent.

If one is calm, the other is expressive.

If one lets his football do most of the talking, the other wears his emotions on his sleeve.

One mesmerizes you with magical dribbling. The other amazes you with breathtaking athleticism.

One creates space where none exists. The other attacks space with unmatched power and precision.

They have different personalities.

They have different strengths.

They have different journeys.

Yet both reached the very top.

Legends in Their Own Ways

Legends are legends.

They don’t become legends because they are compared with someone else.

They become legends because they changed football forever.

There was no one exactly like them before.

There may never be anyone exactly like them again.

So instead of dragging them into an endless cycle of comparisons, why not simply appreciate what each has given to football?

Respect both.

Celebrate both.

Let the legends be legends.

Be it about winning the trophy or World Cup, nothing can change the facts that they have already accomplished.

No World Cup can define Messi.

No World Cup can define Ronaldo.

One’s greatness is not diminished by the other’s success.

For me, no one is behind the other, and no one is ahead either.

It is fortunate for football to have witnessed Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo play at the same time period.

It is itself a privilege.

This type of rivalry may not be seen again in the future.

So instead of asking who is greater, perhaps the better question is this:

How lucky were we to watch two completely different footballing geniuses redefine the beautiful game at the same time?
