8 Essentials While You Travel With a 1-Year-Old Infant

I had to travel with my daughter, who is 1 year old, to another state, which was just a matter of 2 hours by flight. But the hardship I went through prompted me to write a blog hoping this would help moms, especially first-time moms, be prepared.

1. Toys

My little girl is one livewire who doesn’t like to be seated for a long period and loves running around, at least moving around. To keep such children seated, you need things to keep them glued to their seats or focused. With my daughter, her high-contrast books that have contrast images of animals and things keep her interested. I carry her 4 small books in my bag. I don’t want poor co-passengers to suffer because of me. Lol!

2. Lollipop

Yes, you heard me right. I keep her favorite lollipops, not any other chocolate. This is something she enjoys, keeps her focused, and gives me a breathing space.

I don’t prefer to take ones that melt, rather the ones that are candy-like. Better if they are colorful. You can make the introduction a bit more interesting.

“Look, Sarah, here’s a yellow lollipop.”

3. A Player With Rhymes

My child is a die-hard fan of rhymes who has already started singing out loud all the rhymes.

But there is a catch. I wouldn’t suggest showing the video. If it’s a mobile, keep it upside down so that the child only listens to songs.

I am very particular that the child listens rather than watches music or rhymes. Moreover, I want to protect her eyes.

4. Rhymes Book

She adores her rhyme books and the colorful images and enjoys me reading out or singing out rhymes.

It’s the most creative way to keep toddlers engaged and quiet.

5. Swaddling Clothes

In our hurry, we often miss out on simple details. One such essential could be the swaddling cloth. Sometimes, the temperature inside the aeroplane could be too cold for the infant, and warm clothing or a swaddling cloth could bring some respite.

6. Snacks and Eatables

Keep their cycle intact. No matter what time, what place, or who you are with, on earth or flying up in the sky, your infant should get all the necessities on time.

7. Pram

Almost all airlines allow a PRAM for free, which is not a privilege but a necessity. Mothers may not always be able to carry babies or infants in their arms. Instead, use a pram. Just ensure you don’t block the passage for others and air hostesses.

8. Diapers, Wipes and Feeding Essentials

When travelling with a one-year-old, diapers, cleaning wipes, a changing/cleaning mat, feeding bottles, and a flask of hot water are some of the essentials I would never leave behind. Having these within easy reach can make feeding, diaper changes, and cleaning much easier when you are away from home.

Depending on your baby’s routine and the duration and type of your journey, there may be several other things you need to carry as well. It is always better to make a checklist based on your baby’s individual needs before you leave.

Don’t fear the baggage weight that is allowed.

Recently when I traveled, they charged for the baby. They may not allow checked-in baggage, but you can carry baggage around 7 kg.

So next time you travel, plan it well, make a checklist of things that are needed, and set off.

Don’t cancel travel just because you have a person dependent on you. Rather give you and your dependent the best time and experiences of life.

Happy journey!
